Becoming Egypt

I was watching CNN’s GPS with Fareed Zakaria today and he was discussing, of course, the election in Iran. Reza Aslan, an Iranian himself, was among the panel with an analysis of why the opposition is so outspoken.

But the really fascinating thing is that now you have these new coalitions forming amongst centrists and pragmatists, like Rafsanjani, and more reformists groups, like Khatami's followers. And they're trying to come together, put aside some of their ideological reservations, the old right-and-left argument that was so much about politics of the 1990s in Iran, and they're trying to push back against what they see as a militarization of Iranian politics.

They are scared to death that Iran is becoming …

It was only a moment before he completed his sentence but a reel of military regimes went through my head. Cuba, maybe North Korea, and even Iraq during Sadaam Hussien era. I kept compiling the list before he finished the sentence with the brutal truth.

.. Egypt.

!!!

:( :(

Well, Thank you very much Mr. Aslan for reminding us about that, Although we can’t really forget. Special thanks goes out to the Egyptian government that is providing bunch lines for people who actually know what they’re talking about.

To my absolute pleasure :( , the host Fareed Zakaria quickly explained.

You mean a kind of -- a military dictatorship.
